What does it take to be a disciplined person or a disciplined organization?
Maybe we need to first find out what discipline means. The word discipline comes from the Greek language and literally means "to save the mind." When we're disciplined we are developing soundness thought, self-control, and action.
So, what does it take to be a disciplined person?
Energy Performance Tip: Recently I received an email from a leader in Florida. His comments are certainly worth repeating because they "get at" this issue of discipline. "Don't confuse activity with results. It's not about hard work. It's about achieving whatever goal(s) you set for yourself or the organization. We have to make sure we have clearly defined scopes...and then get after it."
Another CEO also responded to an Energy Tip by stating, "Before you ever start thinking "outside the box" you have to have a clear understanding of the "box you are in." Once you understand the situation...truly understand...then you can begin to make progress."
Based on the insights from these two leaders here's my summary of how to be more disciplined. Discipline begins with clearly knowing where you are and having plus communicating the goals you intend to achieve. Then stick to them on a daily basis.
"Everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was" - Robert Louis Stevenson
"The only things you regret are the things you didn't do." - Michael Curtiz
Energy Development Tip: What's your goal? Who in the organization can tell you what the goal is? Ask someone, anyone in your organization what the goal of the company is. Then ask them if they agree with it. Some leaders "think" people know what the goal is and may be surprised to find they don't. If the goal is fuzzy discipline may be applied for the wrong reasons and in the wrong direction.
"Never mistake motion for action." - Ernest Hemingway
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." - Hannah More
"In organizations it's as critical for the people to comprehend the goal as it is to have one." - Dr. Bob
